                        | Laos is the smallest country in Asia. It has no ocean border and was once
a French colony. The Laos Peoples Republic of socialism was enacted in
1975. Because there is still no family register, exact population is difficult
to assess. Laos has a compulsory education system but not enough schools.
Therefore, many children can't go to school even if they wanted to. Mrs. Arimura's husband is Japanese and was born in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Over the past 24 years with the assistance of Japan, he has helped build
14 elementary schools in the mountainous regions of Laos.

IAC has assisted every year since 2000. Now constructing new school next to the old elementry school. Included in this construction are two new toilet facilities.

At the midpoint of the lecture, we enjoyed tea time and delicious IAC member prepared cake of Laos. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments.

Laos has strong family ties and their homes are important. The natonal character of the Laos people respect sanctity of unoccupied homes.

There are no direct flights into Laos from Japan. Fights must be made to
Bangkok or Hanoi in order to reach Laos. There are some world heritage
sites and the best time to visit is during the dry season of October thru
                        April.

Mrs. Arimura wore a magnificent stunning hand-woven costume. She also displayed
other costumes around the lecture room.

At the end of the lecture came question and answer time. Questions included
those of education, food and safety.
Also, there was a Japanese couple who stay three years in Laos working
for JICA. While in Laos at the time of 3.11 earthquake, they began fund
raising activities for disaster assistance. Large donations were gathered
and provided for assistance to Japan.
