Homestay Activities in Chigasaki

Our homestay staff continues our activities with the hope of achieving “Peace in the world through grassroots international exchange.”

At present, our main programs are:

  • French university students: a homestay program lasting three weeks to one month in July (since 1999)
  • Australian university students: a four-day, three-night homestay program at the end of November (since 1994)

The homestay program for French university students is supported by the Inter Cultural Society for the Arts, and the program for Australian university students is funded by the Mitsui Educational Foundation of Australia.

This year, 2025, marks the 26th anniversary of the French university students’ homestay program.

Over the years, we have carried out the following activities:

  • Japanese language classes: conducted twice a week by the Japanese Class Group
  • Kimono dressing and tea ceremony experiences: held at Shoraian Tea House by the Japanese Culture Group, and highly popular among the students

As part of exchanges with young people who will lead the next generation, the students also visit Tsurumine High School, Bunkyo University, and local junior high schools.

Nothing brings us greater joy than hearing that former French students have returned to Japan—continuing their studies or careers—and reunited with their host families to maintain warm friendships.

The most important—and at the same time, the most challenging—part of our homestay program is finding host families willing to welcome students into their homes.

For those who are new to hosting, we recommend starting with the three-night, four-day program for Australian university students.
